Mercoledì 1 novembre, a partire dalle ore 23.00, su SKY Sport 2 andrà in onda “Speciale NBA Andrea Bargnani”, un approfondimento di un’ora dedicato alla nuova stagione di NBA e in particolare, all'esordio di Andrea Bargnani nel campionato di basket più bello del mondo.

Non mancheranno i contributi e le interviste di Flavio Tranquillo, che seguirà il cestista romano nella sua avventura a Toronto e nel trasferimento nel New Jersey prima del debutto. Lo speciale sarà condotto dagli studi di Cologno Monzese da Alessandro Mamoli, con ospite Federico Buffa.

A seguire, alle ore 24.00, andrà in onda la replica della gara di apertura della stagione 2006/2007 della NBA fra i campioni uscenti di Miami ed i Chicago Bulls.

Alle ore 01.30, SKY Sport 2 si collegherà con East Rutherford (New Jersey), per la diretta dell’attesissima sfida fra i Nets e i Toronto Raptors, prima gara ufficiale dell’avventura a stelle e strisce di Andrea Bargnani. La telecronaca sarà affidata a Flavio Tranquillo che così completerà il suo tour nordamericano commentando dal posto la prima di Bargnani e dei suoi Raptors.

Bargnani needs more floor-time
Is Sam guarding job at rookie's expense?

If you're on your way to the Air Canada Centre with your "Andrea Bargnani is a Bust!" sign, remove the magic markers from the vicinity of your nose and consider the possibility that you are not acting rationally. Note that the player to whom Bargnani is often (and perhaps unjustly) compared, Dirk Nowitzki, had an equally inauspicious start to his NBA career.

The German seven-footer, who led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA final this past spring, was only 20 years old when he made his debut in the lockout-shortened 1999 season. And if there were doubters who wondered why the Mavericks thought so highly of him, the skepticism was fuelled when Nowitzki, supposedly a shooter, missed all five of his field-goal attempts in an opening-night loss. He scored a measly two points in 16 minutes in his first NBA game. Ditto Pau Gasol, the seven-foot Spaniard for the Memphis Grizzlies — a 2006 all-star — whose NBA debut amounted to a four-point, four-turnover, three-foul footnote.

It went even worse for Bargnani in the Raptors' season-opening loss to New Jersey. The rookie from Rome they call Il Mago had two points and three fouls and, on the nice side of the ledger, two blocked shots.

And so the draft-class comparisons began. Didn't Adam Morrison, the No.3 pick in the June selection-fest, pop in 14 points for the Bobcats last night? How about Rudy Gay's 21-point work for Memphis (which wasn't bad for a No.8 pick) and Brandon Roy's 20-point evening for the Trail Blazers (pretty good for No.6)? And did you see Tyrus Thomas, the No.4 pick, perform with beastly intensity in brief action during Chicago's Tuesday romp over the Heat?

When the annual general manager's poll asked which rookie would be the best player in five years, Thomas, 20, tied with Bargnani, 21, with 22.5 per cent of the vote? Did Bryan Colangelo, the Raptors general manager, get the right guy? The answer to that last question will begin emerging soon enough.

But first, the magician has to play, beginning in tonight's home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. Bargnani got all of eight minutes and 52 seconds of court time Wednesday. Some have chalked that up to so-called foul trouble, but Sam Mitchell, the Toronto coach, left Bargnani in the game after he picked up two fouls in 80 seconds. And when you consider that Mitchell gave foul-prone Rafael Araujo an average of 12.5 minutes a game in Araujo's lost cause of a rookie season — when you understand that developing Bargnani has to be one of the franchise's priorities if they're to enjoy the long-term success Colangelo is promising — 8:52 won't do.

Now there is a sign worth bringing to the ACC that won't make it look as though the magic markers are doing your sloganeering: "8:52 Just Won't Do!" Make sure Mitchell sees it, because he doesn't necessarily share the view.

And therein lies one of the chief problems du jour in Raptorland. A coach whose contract expires at season's end, as Mitchell's does, has to win, and now. A seven-footer without experience has to play, and plenty. And if Bargnani's playing, gangly and mistake-prone as it might be, costs the team a victory now and then, it shouldn't be a big deal to anyone — except, of course, the coach with the expiring contract.

The mess only irons itself out if Bargnani begins to perform, and pronto. Recall it didn't take long for Nowitzki to answer the skeptics. In his second game he racked up 16 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes. By season's end, after he'd played a lockout-shortened 47 games, he was averaging eight points and 3.4 rebounds in 20 minutes. And keep in mind he was 20, and that he'd also shown plenty of flashes of better times ahead, a 29-point game here, a double-double there. By his fourth year, at age 23, he was an all-star.

Gasol, who was Bargnani's age as a rookie, developed even faster, and he played 36 minutes a night in his debut season. A week into his NBA career he ran off back-to-back games in which he scored a combined 51 points. And that's not to say Bargnani doesn't deserve your patience if the Italian doesn't similarly explode out of the blocks.

What it does say is that we'll know a lot more about just how good Bargnani can be in the not-too-distant future — assuming, that is, he gets sufficient playing time to figure things out for himself, which may be assuming too much.
