In the previous two decades, MGM’s reputation among writers and directors had slumped: it became known as the last stop for agents desperate to sell a project. Parent changed that, buying a string of hot scripts and doing deals with big stars. She acquired the rights to Robert Ludlum’s The Matarese Circle and struck a deal with Denzel Washington to star; she also signed Darren Aronofsky, director of The Wrestler and a bright young talent, to direct a remake of RoboCop. The trouble was that while MGM had money from its library to pay for scripts and development deals, it didn’t have enough money to produce big-budget films. Parent’s hands were tied. Nor had the deals come cheap. “They were spending money like they were Universal,” complains one executive whose company is involved with MGM. “But Universal is owned by GE and isn’t loaded with debt.”

The uncertainty has fed Hollywood’s rampant rumour mill, with the fate of MGM a constant topic of conversation in the Beverly Hills wine bars and lunch spots frequented by film executives and talent agents. Much of the gossip concerns the fate of the stars and directors who have signed deals to work on now-stalled MGM projects, with some drifting away to work on other movies. David Cronenberg was lined up to direct The Matarese Circle, for example, but took a job on another film when the studio got into trouble, as did Aronofsky, when he left the RoboCop remake.

Si sa da almeno una decina di giorni che il progetto è sospeso a tempo indeterminato. Il film non si fa farà. Senza probabilmente e senza ma.

Mah, il remake prima o poi lo faranno, l'idea-base ha sempre avuto molta presa nei film di genere, il marchio ha ancora un certo peso, quindi è solo questione di tempo. Che ci sia poi il buon Darren al timone oppure no, è un altro discorso. Ma la properthy è troppo ghiotta per essere lasciata da parte...

Non c'è bisogno di sfere di cristallo, basta un minimo di memoria storica e cognizione di cosa si stia parlando: Robocop è già passato di mano 2 volte, nondimeno è sempre stato rimesso a frutto dai nuovi aventi diritto quasi subito, con alterne fortune dal punto di vista della validità delle proposte, ma s'è dimostrato profittevole quasi sempre.

Nella sfera di cristallo vedo invece un doom che riprende a parlare con supponenza, e prevedo una risposta a tono (che è quella che vuole, dopotutto certa gente campa per farcisi mandare..). Libero d'essere in disaccordo, ma di parlare agli altri come se fossero delle merde proprio no...

Lasciamo Robocop 1 dov'è. Nelle nostre videoteche, o nei nostri drive esterni. La perfezione del primo episodio, col suo cyberpunk e la sua critica sociale rimarranno un faro solitario per sempre.

NESSUN regista attuale potrebbe far meglio di Verhoeven. E mai lo farà. Il bello è quello.

New RoboCop TV series in the works
Today it was announced that Spyglass were in the John Hancock-stage of taking over fiscally-fucked MGM. Spyglass head honchos Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, the gents behind such films as "The Sixth Sense" and "Wanted", will serve as Co-Chairman and CEOs of the embattled studio following its emergence from bankruptcy.

Should shareholders approve of the pre-packaged Bankruptcy plan, the new-and-improved MGM will likely get to work swiftly on the long-awaited "Hobbit" and James Bond films. It will take about 30 days after the deal goes through for MGM to officially escape the red patch, so don't expect to hear anything about the "Rings" prequel or the new Daniel Craig-starring 007 movie until December at the earliest.

But in addition to films, Variety says MGM are adding a list of TV spin-off's to their to-do roster. On the way are new TV series based on "RoboCop", one based on Thomas Harris' "Silence of the Lambs", and another based on [WTF] the Oscar Winning "Dances with Wolves".

The "Wolves" one is a head-scratcher - what could they possibly do with that!? A mini-series, in the vein of "Lonesome Dove", might work but a fully-fledged series based on the adventures of 'Dances' and Stands-with-a-fist? That I have to see.

A "Silence of the Lambs" TV series might also be interesting. Assumingly, MGM don't have the thumbs up to tell stories from Harris' other Lecter books, so the TV show would have to solely fix on Hannibal's incarcerated adventures from "Lambs" - and whatever new stories they come up with. Picturing a young Rachel Nichols or Dakota Fanning playing plucky rookie FBI Agent Clarice Starling who, week after week, seeks Hannibal the Cannibal's advise in capturing the baddie of the week.

"RoboCop"? no surprise there. The Paul Verhoeven film has spawned quite a few series - including, most recently, a fairly decent TV mini-series titled "RoboCop : Prime Directives". With Darren Aronofsky's film version stalled, not surprising to hear MGM are pushing to get the metal giant back on... well, any screen. Like Rocky and Inspector Clouseau, Robo's one of their strongest properties.

Again, it won't be before Christmas until we start hearing about some of Spyglass/MGM's new film and TV series plans.
