...The car was designed by Maurice Phillipe, and was unlike anything ever seen before. The chassis was a "Parnelli" and it had the radiators moved to the sides of the car like the McLaren except they were constructed within dihedral wings and the original version utilized no rear wing on the car.
All of the media were invited to the unveiling/first test during the off season at Ontario Motor Speedway, Mario Andretti and Al Unser flipped a coin to see who would test drive the car first. Al won the coin toss. Al took a couple of slow laps then a couple more laps close to racing speed and brought the car in. Mario said that when Al Unser took his helmet off his face was as white as a sheet. Mario said that he didn't really need to ask Al what he thought about the car. Al Unser turned it over to Mario, who shortly thereafter drove it directly to the garage and told Parnelli Jones to make up an excuse to get rid of the media, because the car was total junk...
They were an ill conceived idea by designer Maurice Phillippe who Mario brought along and had little to no experience designing Indy cars. The car was a mess and George Bignotti was charged with make something useable out of it. Test proved the dihedral wings useless and they where scrapped in favor of regular front and rear wings.
