Pre-Production Begins on New Game in 'The Longest Journey' Saga

Funcom is excited to announce that 'Dreamfall Chapters', the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning adventure title 'Dreamfall: The Longest Journey', has gone into pre-production at Red Thread Games, a new studio founded by Ragnar Tørnquist, creator of 'The Longest Journey' saga.

Red Thread Games has licensed the rights to 'The Longest Journey' universe from Funcom, and Mr. Tørnquist will spearhead development of 'Dreamfall Chapters', while continuing in an advisory role as Creative Director on Funcom’s recently launched modern-day massively multiplayer online game ‘The Secret World’.

Last month Joel Bylos stepped into the position as Game Director on the myths, legends and conspiracy themed online game, allowing Mr. Tørnquist to devote more of his time to 'Dreamfall Chapters', which recently entered pre-production.

Red Thread Games will independently fund and produce the sequel to 'Dreamfall', and has entered into a revenue sharing agreement with Funcom as part of the licensing deal. Funcom owns the intellectual property rights for 'The Longest Journey', but due to the company’s focus on and commitment to the development of online games, the decision was made to license the rights to Mr. Tørnquist and his new development studio. The close working relationship between Funcom and Mr. Tørnquist will allow him to continue on as Creative Director of Funcom’s ‘The Secret World’, in parallel with putting together a team to develop 'Dreamfall Chapters'.

“I'm very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the 'The Longest Journey' saga,” says Ragnar Tørnquist. “Ever since we ended 'Dreamfall' on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible. I'm extremely grateful to Funcom for this unique and exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to dive back into the universe I helped create more than a decade ago, and continue the story players have been waiting for these past six years."

Red Thread Games will release more details about 'Dreamfall Chapters' in the coming months.

Tra l'altro leggendo sopra Tornquist s'è assicurato l'uso dei diritti di dreamfall ma non quelli di tlj: sembra una cosa assurda visto che dreamfall è il seguito di tlj, ma non è che questa sottile puntualizzazione legale comporterà qualcosa di diverso nello sviluppo?

Concordo, è la prima cosa che ho notato. Zoe gli era riuscita veramente bene nel secondo.

Non ho ancora capito se han in mente di farne una specie di capitolo ad episodi, come era pianificato in origine, o se han cambiato idea e ne faranno un unico episodio.
Non ho neanche capito se han voglia di ripetere gli stessi (grossi) errori del primo dreamfall e relegare la parte adventure a quattro enigmi in croce (che anche un bambino di dieci anni può risolvere da solo) lasciando ai combattimenti e alle sequenze arcade il grosso del gioco (e l'idea di lasciare un controllo misto joypad/mouse lo lascierebbe intendere), o se questa volta la parte "avventura grafica" sarà più estesa e curata.
Questa volta sono combattuto, aspetterò con calma maggiori info prima di donare.

Comunque penso anche io che sarà così. L'unico dubbio che rimane è se ci sia in ballo qualche publisher o è davvero tutto in mano agli sviluppatori.

Ok, una ricerchina mi ha fatto trovare due cose: un post di Tornquist su twitter ed una sua intervista: DC non sarà episodico e non avrà elementi stealth e combattimenti (visto che il grosso dei feedback degli utenti su tali punti è stato negativo).
Sarà basato sull'esplorazione e sugli enigmi (per questo abbineranno mouse e tastiera per controllare il gioco): pare che questi ultimi saranno funzionali al gioco e non sovrabbondanti come in TLJ.
Mi auguro solo che il tutto non si traduca in un arcade 3D con "evoluti" elementi adventure tipo the cave dei double fine...
EDIT: Tornquist ha risposto ad un bel po' di domande dei fan: un po' di rassicurazioni le ha date, ma imho 10 ore di gameplay (vedi una delle risposte all'ultimo link) sono un insulto!

PS. su kickstarter sono già arrivati a 778.000 dollari e mancano ancora 23 giorni quindi molto probabilmente si aggiungeranno a breve anche degli stretch goals

Annunciati gli stretch goal, sono aperte le speculazioni: direi che quello da 1050000$ lascia presagire il ritorno di Cortez (personaggio chiave di TLJ che in dreamfall aveva giusto un cameo alla fine dopo i titoli di coda se ricordo bene), mentre quello da 2 milioni imho significa "con quei soldi ci ricompriamo di diritti della serie da funcom così poi possiamo gestirceli in proprio senza dipendere da altri".
Credo che aspetterò come un avvoltoio che qualche slot limitato da 20$ si liberi (di solito succede verso la fine del kickstarter, quando qualcuno disdice o passa a reward superiori), così magari dono (anche perché il rolling demo mi ha convinto che non sarà una robaccia troppo arcade come il suo predecessore).
BTW, non mi pare abbiano ancora parlato di requisiti hardware, ma secondo voi con un dual core a 3 ghz, quattro giga di ram e una geforce 450 ce la faccio (anche coi settaggi video al minimo)?
