anche per i non amanti dell'NCAA (tipo Beato ) consiglio vivamente il documentario della serie ESPN 30 for 30 dedicato ai Fab Five di Michigan, comprendenti Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard e Chris Webber.
Dà una idea dell'impatto che hanno avuto sul basket collegiale e anche sulla società americana, ed entra anche nelle questioni off court del college basket (soldi, insomma ).

Kemba Walker recently read his first book

Connecticut star guard Kemba Walker announced today he would forgo his senior season and enter the NBA draft. It was an expected move not only because he led the Huskies to a national championship, but also because he had participated in Senior Day festivities and is set to graduate from school in three years.

According to Sports Illustrated, Walker appears to have gone through college having only recently completed reading an entire book for the first time.
And in his travel pack is a copy of New York Times columnist William C. Rhoden's Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete, a book that Crump encouraged Walker to read as part of an independent study class on racism in sports. Before the Final Four, [academic counselor Felicia] Crump suggested that Rhoden's book would be the first that Walker had ever made it through cover-to-cover. After the win over Kentucky, Walker confirmed this. "That's true," he said. "You can write that. It is the first book I've ever read."

Walker admittedly found it difficult to make the academic transition after high school, but worked with Crump to come up with a plan to earn his sociology degree in three years and is close to achieving his goal.

"I just need to finish up strong," Walker told reporters. "It won't be hard. I'm gonna take all the time I need to graduate and most likely I will."

According to the Hartford Courant, here's the plan for Walker to complete his studies and leave school with his degree.
He'll finish course work over the next few weeks and will have some online courses and internship (probably conducted with the NBA team that drafts him) in order to officially graduate. He will walk in the commencement next month.

No, non mafiosa nel senso di corrotta e falsa, i risultati sono più che veri.
Ho usato il termine sbagliato, avrei dovuto usare ipocrisia invece di mafia. Perchè tutti questi atleti i libri li vedono col cannocchiale. Però poi li si massacra se osano accettare qualche soldo (Ohio State? Reggie Bush?).
E intanto le università, le TV e la stessa NCAA si ingrossano le tasche.

Cioè che ci siano delle zone scure ok, ma non capisco a cosa possa essere finalizzato un sistema "pseudomafioso" all'interno di una lega se non al controllo del risultato sportivo, cioè a che serve il sistema mafioso se poi il risultato è sempre imprevedibile? L'Ncaa non è più mafiosa dell' NBA o del campionato italiano, il resto son pregiudizi.

Il professionismo significherebbe la fine della NCAA. Le leghe sono pealtro conniventi, NBA su tutte (vedi regole di eleggibilità al draft), ma anche la NFL e le altre non scherzano.
E poi ci sono troppi soldi in ballo. Io non so se voi seguite il college football, ma la situazione della "postseason" è un perfetto esempio di come le cose non cambieranno mai.

Pessima decisione

I thought colleges were about helping students with guidance and some expertise when making life-changing decisions.

But not if your college basketball player.

The NCAA approved a ridiculous rule that moves the deadline day for a college player to declare for the draft up to the day before the spring National Letter of Intent signing period. This year that would have been April 12. One week after the national championship game.

So good luck college baller, you have eight days to gather information, talk to reliable sources and find out whether you should pull out of college and enter the NBA draft or not. Biggest decision of your life. But be sure to rush it.

Who this benefits is coaches, who learn earlier who they need to replace. It also benefits universities and their free labor sources.

Before you start making the “they are getting a free education” argument, we are not talking about 95 percent of college basketball players here. For the vast majority of guys playing college basketball, going on to the NBA is not really an option (a dream, sure, but not a reality). For them, they are staying in school and getting their education (hopefully, but that’s another issue).

But the 100 or so top players — the best players at their schools, the guys the universities make the most money on in terms of ticket sales, jersey sales and more — whether or not to declare for the draft is a huge decision. Frankly, it’s a much easier decision if you are Kyrie Irving or someone who every legitimate source says is a top pick or near it.

But for the guy who has some people around him saying he’s a lottery pick while others are saying he might not get drafted, the guy getting pressured by people at the university to stay, some time to work out for and talk to NBA scouts and front office people and get an honest assessment is key. It’s the difference in making a smart informed decision or leaving a college student to guess at his future.

We thought that colleges were about helping students make educated decisions. But not the NCAA, not when its own self-interests are involved.

La portaerei Carl Vinson è tornata mercoledì scorso a San Diego e oggi dovrebbe arrivare l'annuncio ufficiale. Si giocherà sulla rampa di lancio degli aerei, dove verrà allestito uno stadio da 7.000 posti.

"Ora che la Carl Vision è tornata sana e salva e che l'America è consapevole dell'importanza della missione che ha compiuto, reputiamo motivo di orgoglio che questa nava faccia la storia due volte nel 2011", ha detto Mike Whalen della Morale Entertainment Foundation che organizzerà l'evento.
