But why even look back at System Shock 2 at this point? Because Irrational has been, and it plans to make a related announcement this Friday (tomorrow). The studio has decided that it wishes to further what it started in System Shock 2--to work on games that promote "emergent" gameplay--open-ended exploration that offers many choices and combinations of options to players. You'll see what we mean tomorrow. Be sure to come back then.

    Quote:
While System Shock 2 represented what Irrational general manager Ken Levine describes as "a convergence of technology and commercialism" (that game took place on a corporate-sponsored starship), BioShock will instead represent "a convergence of technology and biological life," or more specifically, genetics. It's important to note: BioShock is not a sequel to any of the System Shock games, nor does it have any official relation to those games. But like the previous games, this one will offer a horror-themed gameplay experience in which what you observe, and what happens to you, will be tempered by your own choices. "[At Irrational], we think emergence is the future," says Levine.
BioShock takes place in a mysterious genetic laboratory. Other than that the complex is strewn with corpses (also for reasons unknown), nothing is clear to you. From what you can tell, the laboratory complex is apparently a holdover from World War II--you'll see remnants of the war as well as peeling paint throughout the complex. Something apparently happened back then that caused the complex to be abandoned by whoever was using it. In fact, the complex has only recently come back into use by the scientists circa the early 21st century, and advanced, top-secret contraptions used for arcane biotechnology experiments have been hastily bolted into the rotting walls of the complex.

    infatti.

BioShock is also being created by the majority of the team who created System Shock 2 and many of the games which helped inspire it. This group includes me, Jon Chey (project lead), Steve Kimura (Art), Mauricio Tejerina (art), Nate Wells (art), Ian Vogel (design), and Alexx Kay (design).

When Looking Glass went out of business (RIP, man, that place rocked the world and never got the credit they deserved), we were able to hire :
Eric Brosius (sound guru who created the sound for both Shock 2 and the entire Thief series),
Dorian Hart (design on Shock 2, Thief and Terra Nova),
    Shawn Robertson (art),
    Darren Lafreniere (programming),
    Sara Verrilli (design on Thief).

We're also incredibly lucky to have Robb Waters at Irrational, who not only created the look of Freedom Force, but was also the man who did the concept art for System Shock 1 and Terra Nova.

    http://www.sshock2.com/bioshock/shownews .asp?id=17

    * gameplay incentrato sulle scelte del giocatore
    * l'obiettivo principale è l'immersione (asd) nella storia
    * gioco ambientato nei primi anni '60
    * degli scenziati scoprono alcune creature degli abissi
    * all'inizio ci si risveglierà tra delle rovine e per prima cosa sarà necessario sopravvivere
    * si potranno creare armi ed oggetti
    * gli accrescimenti al pg avranno effetti sulle armi
    * si potrà hackerare, essendo il pg un ingegnere
    * l'eventuale uso di walkthrough si rivelerà inutile

Jason Cross: I've enjoyed pretty much everything Irrational has done and I love the whole idea of BioShock, so I have my fingers crossed. I just hope that they've seriously stepped up the technology since the last Vengence engine game. I mean, you could tweak the Vengence engine a little and come out with a competitive game last year, but for a late 2006 or a 2007 release...let's just say that technology marches on big time, and they'll be competing for the spotlight with some pretty amazing looking games. I'd hate for people to just discount BioShock out of hand because it's not something they're familiar with and it doesn't look as pretty and "gee whiz" technologically cool as the other games of its time. Sort of like what happend with System Shock 2.
Ken Levine: Jason, the rendering engine and lighting has been completely re-written. I should know, I paid for it! (well, until recently...)

"The game opens in the early 1960s as you find yourself flailing underwater, floating in the ocean as debris falls from above. Bobbing to the surface, you are surrounded by bodies and the wreckage of an airplane. [...] With survival as your immediate goal, you scan the horizon for signs of land, and you notice something conspicuously out of place. In the middle of the ocean, leagues from civilization, is a single lighthouse jutting up from the water. Swimming closer to investigate, you reach the mysterious structure and scale the stairs inside only to find another oddity: a bathosphere occupied by a dead body. With nowhere to go but down, you remove the unfortunate passenger and climb into the diving apparatus, descending into the unknown below. As you near the ocean floor, you see the lights and structure of an entire city rising to meet you"

    delle creature oceaniche
"That's what makes Bioshock different from a game like Doom, where you see monsters ahead of you, then step over an invisible trigger and they charge you", insists Levine. "There's so much you can do with an AI that only knows cover and flank. We want to build a relationship between AIs". This relationship is heavily dependent on how the environment is populated and the various creatures' roles within that world. For instance, some of your primary foes in BioShock are called Aggressors, deformed soldiers in Ryan's genetically modified army. These tormented beings patrol the corridors, attacking the player as well as scattered remnants of Fontaine's forces. Irate and brutal as Aggressors may be, they will generally ignore the one thing keeping Rapture (the name of the city) alive: the Gatherers."

    The game begins
    Spoiler:
with no real introduction or backstory. You come-to underwater, in the middle of the ocean. Swimming to the surface, you find you have been in some sort of plane crash - the surface of the water is on fire, and luggage and debris floats around you. In the distance is a lighthouse-like structure floating in the middle of the ocean, inside which is an art-deco entrance to Rapture, a mini-submarine that takes you to the sea bed.

    Bioshock is set in
    Spoiler:
Rapture, an underwater city and failed utopia. Built by an ex-Soviet in 1946 for the world's cultural elite, it was to be a society where the best people can do their best work, unconstrained by government, religion and "bullshit notions of altruism". Rapture is a utopian, extravagant city, not made of steel and steam but wood and marble. Of course, this doesn't last for long.
    Spoiler:
A stem-cell generating sea-slug dubbed 'Adam' is discovered, and with its abilities to alter the human form it quickly becomes a currency and valued commodity. This upsets the delicate balance of power and econonmy in the city, leading to conflict and power struggles with people using Adam to alter their biology for the more violent, physical struggle that ensues. You arrive in the early 60's to find the place ruined, much like SS2.
Levine states "The focus is to create a world that we draw the player into as deeply as possible, even deeper than in System Shock 2".

As there was no conventional weaponry in Rapture, its inhabitants had to improvise and cobble them together with household items such as tomato tins, model airplane engines and office chairs. All weapons are modifiable, and Levine says "the weapons system alone is more complex and deeper than in any other FPS."

    The most common enemy are
    Spoiler:
the Aggressors - people who've had to mutate just to survive. Although they are now aggressive they are still aware of who they were and what they have become. Any enemy can use any weapon found in the game, and can have abilities such as climbing walls and ceilings.

    Spoiler:
Gatherers are children who obtain Adam by recycling it from dead bodies. They are protected by massive mutated pet-like beasts, Protectors. These go about their business in Rapture, and wont bother you unless you bother them. It is possible to befriend Gatherers and share some of their Adam, but the only way to get all of the valuable Adam is take on their tough Protector and actually kill the child.
Levine says he intends this to add to the real moral choices within the game. As the game progresses you get to learn the story of the Gatherers and how they have been exploited.

The skill system is similar to SS2, with abilities, 'plasmids', purchasable using Adam at plasmid stations around Rapture. Once these abilities are installed, they cannot be changed until you reach another plasmid station. Abilities can affect strength, agility, etc., or even the AI, turning Aggressors to your side and fighting other enemies.

The AI is important, says Levine. It is intended to be a world where there's an active ecology, each character and enemy having their own motivations and behaviours, and interacting with each other and the player. The player will be able to interact with and impact this ecology, affecting it in planned and unplanned ways. Unlike SS2, the world and areas are open-ended, and the gameplay much more emergent.

Using a 'heavily modified' Unreal Engine 3, the screenshots look very promising. Huge creatures, variously clad in old-fashioned divesuits and mechanical apparatus, tower menacingly above the player. A tiny, shoeless Gatherer in a pink dress is seen running away through a garden-like area covered in foliage. The intact city is elegant art-deco, clad in wood with exposed metalwork and detailed furnishings. Streets are lined with bright, retro-styled neon signage. In SS2 style, 'Gene Traitor' has been scrawled in blood on the wall of an extravagant bathroom, now flooded.
