il primo age of empire era epico.

    New Year, New Website!
    by Cysion | Jan 22, 2015 | News | 0 Comments

A new year, a new website! Not that this is a rule, but we figured we might stay with the times. As you can see on the front page we have no less than 3 projects in the making. One will be announced in the next weeks probably.

What else to expect? More articles for Age of Empires II will keep popping up in our Strategy Center. Including highlights for cool Steam Workshop items. If you’d like to see some highlighted, don’t hesitate to fire us an email. Any bugreports on the new website are welcome as well :$

Announcing Age of Empires II: LD Edition
    1 aprile - MS Ryz0n
    AOE II: LD
Through extensive user research with specialized focus groups, it was determined a fundamental feature required reinstatement within the series. Today we are pleased to announce Age of Empires II: Low Definition Edition.

Designed with your CRT monitors in mind, AOE II: LD is available for all AOE II HD owners for a limited time. Re-live the experience the way it was designed, with an internal render resolution of 800x600 glorious pixels. Squint to make out letters and words like you did while playing during computer class instead of finishing homework. Or in the evenings to ‘study’ for that history exam. Or at a friend’s house until you got kicked out to go play outside because it was sunny and their parents needed to use the internet for something before they ran out of the 10 hours of internet time that came on the AOL CD….

    That's an eagle scout there...we think...maybe?

Moving on! So how do you get this modern marvel? Just right click on your game in the steam library, go to “properties”, and the “betas” tab. Select aoeii:LD from the drop down menu and you’re off to the races! Just don’t forget to feed your Tamagotchi before sitting down for an evening of classic history. 56K modem sound effects not included.

We’ll probably get lots of letters asking why make this change now? Why delight players so, over a decade and a half after the game came out? It’s best to let the research report from our Fecundity User Department speak for itself, an excerpt is as follows:

Satisfaction surveys and usability histograms discovered historic authenticity and nostalgic reverence were fundamental decision drivers for large portions of highly desirable target markets with excellent retention and low variability amongst titles. Additionally, developing organic buzz had greater segment reach when unique experiences synergized with perceived accuracy to expected impressions and desirability within the audience. Recommended is strategizing perfunctory development on revolutionary immersive experiences tailored to revitalizing and energizing the classic customer base while increasing engagement of existing users.
We don’t really have any idea what that means aside from going for the highest buzzword per sentence ratio possible, but happy April 1st anyway!

Note: AOEII:LD represents game changes that should remain functional in online experiences...if for whatever reason you want to play multiplayer like that.

Stay tuned next week for our next real AOE patch - with more on the way through the year.

Age of Empires II HD – Dev Blog #1 – New Civilizations

by Cysion | Apr 17, 2015 | Age of Empires, Dev Blog, News | 1 Comment

We’ve got another expansion to make, so where to start! We’re all joyously filled with crazy, weird ideas, bouncing them off the wall and eachother. But we’ll have to squeeze those ideas into a proper game. So where to start? Just like last time, it starts with the core of the new content, the new civilizations.
    A Theme

In Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten, we were presented with a rather obvious civ choice. Ensemble Studios had left hints behind on which civs they would’ve loved to add to the game. Some were nations that appeared in campaigns but were never turned into a proper, playable civ. Those were the easy choices, but now that we’ve used the most obvious ones, where do we go next? Over the last year(s), we’ve received a lot of feedback from players on possible new civilizations. Ranging from Medieval powerhouses like the Normans and the Khmers to less obvious or specific suggestions such as the Kingdom of Jerusalem or the Principality of Pannonia. But unlike our broader approach to AoF, we’ve decided to build out more of a thematic flair and pay a visit to a continent south of Europe with a rich history: Africa. We’ll be covering civilizations both born within the content, as well empires that held great power in the region – including one that has been requested many, many, many times by the fans.

But to keep things a bit exciting, they will all be revealed over the coming weeks, so feel free to speculate

Oh except for the first one!
    The Berbers

The Berbers (~700 AD) are the first African civilization to be seen in the new expansion pack. We caught a glimpse of them in the original El Cid campaigns in “The Conquerors”, where they are portrayed in a more generic term as Saracens. Berbers, however, are more than worthy of becoming an Age of Empires civilization. With dynasties across Northern Africa, the ancient Berbers will primarily be a Cavalry & Naval civilization. They’ll have 2 unique units and will also feature a unique technology that affects the entire team.

    http://www.forgottenempires.net/wp-c...P-1024x787.png

Since we’re early in development, we don’t have a lot of screenshots yet, but the Camel Archer is already properly functional in the game and looking good. As if it has always been hopping around in the Age of Empires II universe. It was of course teased with the overall expansion announcement.

And last but not least, the Berbers will have their own campaign, but we’ll share more on that later as well.

So this will be it for the first dev blog, it’s more of a tease than a proper “dev” blog, but we’ll certainly dig a bit deeper in the next episodes. We’re hoping to do these monthly, make sure you don’t miss out

    June's Update
Wow May is gone already, and time has been flying by for all of us here at Microsoft Studios, Skybox Labs, and Forgotten Empires. We have a massive overhaul to Age of Empires II HD coming up here in June, so I will be making several posts to cover this stuff in detail over the next week. For those who are more of the TLDR crowd though, let’s do a summary of key takeaways. There are two main points of pain here as we go through this update, one around file size downloads, the other around updating to the new mod SDK and the effect on the workshop. I think most people will find the changes worth it at the end of the day.

Redoing the data structure for Age of Empires content.
This underlying work was necessary for several of the other game features, both the improved mod management system, as well as the multiplayer lobby. While on its own this item isn’t exactly user facing, it does require us to change how the depots are configured in Steam. Because of those changes, our June patch will require you to re-download a significant amount of data (estimating about 2-3GB right now). Unfortunately we can’t do a pre-load for the update.

    Localization Improvements
Localization and string tables are being improved and condensed. We’re seeing a few bugs get resolved from this around localization as well. Nothing super fancy.
    Bugfixes
Most of these are around single player crashes in campaigns, but there are numerous bugfixes to existing and newer features across the board.

    Multiplayer Lobby
I’ve got a lot to cover in this below for the full brief, but at the most basic level this involves having a single lobby screen regardless of what content you own / wish to play / etc. In our new lobby browser you’ll be able to see if a game has been hosted with expansion content or if it is the base game.
We want people to check out all of the new awesome civs in the AoF expansion, so we’re going to let players who don’t have the expansion get a taste of the new civs. If a vanilla only player joins an expansion game, they will be able to choose from a rotating pool of civilizations. Initially this will be a couple of base civs, plus one civilization from the expansion to try. There are a ton of other rules and conditions here to cover, but we’re hoping to see a lot of new multiplayer games running with the AoF content!
    Re-vamping Mods
Two years ago when AOE II HD was released the steam workshop SDK from valve was far more limited than today’s offering. While some features have been fairly easy to add, the June update will see a full overhaul to the latest Steam SDK (May 2015). Tired of verifying files to remove a mod? Publishing a mod and having trouble fitting all of your files? All of these will be solved!
But there’s a downside here, in order to accomplish both this and the Mod Manager, it means that old mods will no longer function. Thankfully we’ll be making it fairly easy to migrate to the new mod system, and if the author updates their mod then you’ll be good to go.
We’re also unbundling a few packages even further to help modders make visual changes to just individual units without needing to replace an entire container.

    Patch 4.0
The patch you've all been waiting for has arrived.

    Discuss it here.

EDIT: We're aware of an issue in which old local files, like scenarios and RMS scripts, are not relocating to the new locations. We're working on a fix for this issue, but in the meantime, you can get around this by manually relocating the files.

    Notes Before You Update
We've discovered a bug inside the Steam update system, where certain people may experience a never-ending cycle of updating, reporting corruption, verifying cache, and then updating again. When we originally launched the HD Edition on Steam, mods have been stored inside the AgeHD\mods\ directory as extensionless files. Somehow these files confuse Steam and that triggers the corruption message. If this should happen to you, please manually delete these extensionless files inside your mods directory and then the update should work.

To get to your installation directory, right click on the Age of Empires II: HD Edition in your Steam library, select Properties, then select the Local Files tab, and click the Browse Local Files button. A Windows Explorer will open up to the correct location. One you've upgraded to the latest version, this won't happen again because we've done away this system entirely.

Age of Empires II: Teasing at E3 2015

    by Cysion | Jun 20, 2015 | Age of Empires, News | 17 Comments

Our latest dev blog had some content redacted at the last minute, but we’re happy to reveal that now! The producer of the Age of Empires series at Microsoft, Ryan Chaply, was present at E3 and teased some upcoming goodness for the whole Age series.
Age of Empires II HD: The African Kingdoms

First and foremost, the name is out! Age of Empires II HD: The African Kingdoms will be the name of the new expansion pack, coming out later this year on Steam.

Additionally, a new civ has been announced, including a small teaser video with further information regarding the Malians and the Berbers. As well as little hints for further additions to the game. We’ll certainly cover more of those in extended detail in future posts, but we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss out on some possible speculation 

    E3 Teaser

We’ll keep you posted with more goodness next weeks, including some in-depth detail on the latest patch notes and the strengths of the new mod manager.
Ormai si sapeva che sarebbe stato dedicato alle fazioni africane ma non mi piace il titolo, per quel che vale.
