Its often said that the strangest habits occur behind the net curtains and embroidered pelmets of suburbia, and according the Sunday Mirror, this may be true.
A Surrey couple have gone through a traumatic divorce following the husbands decision to undergo a sex change, without telling his wife.
Stephen Everett had been happily married to Catherine Everett for 7 years, during which time the couple had two children.
Despite the veneer of suburban bliss, Mr Everett 41, was harbouring a secret longing to be a woman. The couple met 11 years ago whilst both employed at a pizza restaurant. They married in 1999, and their children are now aged seven and five.
Following the birth of their second child, Mrs Everett began to notice her husbands unconventional behaviour. One day, she walked into the bathroom to speak to her husband and saw more than she expected.
Mrs Everett, of The Drive, said: "I opened the bathroom door. He was standing there naked and he had small, round breasts.
"I couldn't think straight. My head was all over the place. Later that night we tried to talk about it.
"I kept thinking, 'how could I not have known?' But then I thought back at how strangely he had been acting and it all seemed to fall into place."
Mrs Everett claimed that at the beginning of their relationship, there was nothing to indicate gender confusion, but he gradually started to display more feminine traits over the years.
The 26-year-old said: "He started wearing a dress to pick the kids up from school. Everyone knew what we were going through."
She added: "Stephen tried wearing men's clothes but he'd always go back to his dresses, high heels and handbags.
"We would go out with the children and people would shout 'freak!'.
"When he took the kids swimming he wore a bikini. I knew we had to divorce."
The pair's divorce was finalised in January and they now live separate lives.
