Partitona stavolta.
Grande bargnani.

The first two seasons of Andrea Bargnani's NBA career were a little rough. He faced the combined challenges of being an NBA rookie, while also being new to America and the NBA style of play. As a seven-footer there were certain preconceived notions that he and the Toronto Raptors had to reconcile, a process that has quickened with the departure of Jermaine O'Neal and the arrival of Shawn Marion.
"He's been playing well the last month and a half," Raptors captain Chris Bosh said of Barngani. "When Jermaine was here and he was out, that's when Andrea really stepped up his game. We're still trying to get our chemistry right, but I think we've come a long way. We're playing well together right now and we just have to keep building and keep getting better.
Bargnani put together what were easily the best two months of his career in January (19.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 49% FG) and February (17.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.1 blocks). Part of that was due to ongoing injuries to O'Neal, while part of it was due to a switch the team was able to make when Marion arrived via trade.
"I think we're able to play guys at their more natural positions now," says head coach Jary Triano. "Shawn can play the three and guard threes. Bargnani is a big guy who can take another big guy outside and away from the basket. Also, Bosh likes to play at that 15' range. No offense to Jermaine (O'Neal), but when he was with us he played in kind of the same area where Chris Bosh wants the basketball and it kind of made things congested inside. I think we have better spacing right now and a better flow for what we're trying to do."
Part of what they're trying to do is turn a perceived weakness - Bargnani's finesse game - into a mismatch for other teams. The European big man isn't much of a banger, but "The Magician's" ability to make opposing big men disappear (to the bench) is turning into a huge positive. In Dallas, for instance, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said he kept Erick Dampier on the bench because the match-up with Bargnani "wasn't fair" to Dampier, a slower, more traditional center.
"Andrea's playing in a comfort zone and he's playing well," says Anthony Parker. "We're definitely trying to put him in situations where it's tough for opposing big men to step out and guard a guy like Andrea. We're trying to put him in situations where he can use his quickness. He's getting to the basket a lot more this year and posting up. Teams aren't able to switch up smaller guys on him like they did in the past."
"I think it's the other part of the game that's helped him," adds Triano. "His rebounding and defense have improved to the point where we can keep him on the floor for long periods of time and with that comes the confidence in his ability to score the basketball at the offense end and he's been pretty solid for us for a consistent six or seven weeks."
It's been an adjustment for Bargnani, one that would have been much more difficult a decade ago. The NBA has evolved since then, thanks to a large influx of European big men, and with that evolution has come a new style of play that favors seven-footers who can put the ball on the floor and knock down threes. Dirk Nowitzki is the best European player in the game, but even he needed three seasons to truly come into his own in the NBA. No one understands that better than Jose Calderon, who has played his share of Euroleague games.
"Andrea's a great guy. He's a seven-footer, he can put the ball on the floor and he can do a little bit of everything. With Shawn at the three, Andrea has more freedom to play at an easier position for him. I think he just needs to get more confidence and once he starts feeling it he can be a great player in this league. He can be better than he is now. I think he has to realize he can be one of the best at his position because of all the things he can do."
The Raptors have already begun to realize it, though they also realize that having Bargnani at the five will require an adjustment by the team.
"Andrea's definitely a five man, and I think that's what the team and management have noticed is that he's a mismatch five," says Jason Kapono. "He's a jump-shooting five who can pull a traditional center away from the basket. With him and Chris (Bosh) playing the four/five we're obviously not going to be a half-court, post-up team. We have to use our quickness at those spots and create more of an up-tempo game."
Clearly Bargnani has the confidence of his coaching staff and teammates. Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo, too, feels that Bargnani's new-found role with the team will make them much better in the long run.
"Andrea has played very well since mid-December. This is just his third year in the league and he is growing and developing as you would expect any 23-year-old 4-5 player would. His future should be a bright one when and if it all comes together for him."
The way he's been playing lately, the future may be now for Andrea Bargnani.
Grande Mago :sisi:
career high :rullezza: 17 :rullezza:
