Head Humper
Steamcast
Steamcast recently held a podcast and interview with Mike Hillard, Kevin Sisk , and Ben Truman. The trio talk about Black Mesa's development, future goals, headaches, achievements, and even provide exclusive never before heard sound clips from the game. Steamcast is behind on episodes but you can listen to the
unedited stream( skip to 14m ).
- Mike Hillard voiced Black Mesa's human scientists, voiced "Red" in Penumbra: Overture, and was the narrator in the game The Ball.
- Kevin Sisk voiced the Security Guards, Barney Calhoun, and G-man. Kevin is consider a "jack of all trades" for he is also responsible for scripting, choreography scenes, sound engineering, and a master at face poser.
- Ben Truman is responsible for writing Black Mesa's story and lines for our voice actors. Ben ensures the quality of lines to fit within the context of the original game.
Face-Humping Experiment
In 2009 Black Mesa looked amazing but the gameplay hardly compared to the visual quality. Experimentation began to grow within the team to bring about enjoyable mechanics. Many of the experiments succeeded while others failed.
Fans will be able to toggle on old experiments which failed through the game menu.
One such failed experiment is known as the "Headcrab Face-Humping" mechanic. Paul Peloskis' idea was to allow the headcrab to latch on to player's head. The player would have to fight off the headcrab to live or face death.
It worked well in the test map, but was really annoying in real in-game combat.- No real way to fight back immediately!
- They do not really telegraph their presence to the player like, say, a houndeye or vortigaunt or human grunt.
- The player has little to no way to know that it's coming, and once it happens it's not immediately obvious how to get it off.
- The player no longer has control.
- How would the player handle other enemies while under the influence of a headcrab attack?
Dozens of modifications failed to bring the experiment into an enjoyable experience. We essentially gave a low-level enemy the ability to frustrate the player. It is an interesting mechanic but failed on so many levels.
The behavior can be turned on by players but is disabled by default.

The past few days I have sought to improve and clean up Anomalous Materials (AM for short). AM encourages players to interact with the AI to provoke fun and to experience what it is like to work at Black Mesa. Who are these scientists? What do they do? How do they work...if they even work at all? Ben Truman, is the man responsible for the story , ensures just about every NPC in the map has a story to tell through either direct interaction or through observation. Almost every scientist has a role to play not only during the first player encounter but even more after the player obtains the hazard suit. The complexity of handling every choreo-sequence and script-sequence for pre-hev suit and pos-hev suit is a mangled mesh of entity work, script files, and customized code.

Most of NPCs have a specific line or two of dialog which we want the player to hear and see before it can play any sort of standardized idle responses. Characters speak lines randomly within a 15 to 30 second delay between responses.
These responses are considered to be "dynamically," where by the player must be near the bounds and certain conditions must be met. Players can even run up to an NPC in AM and press the +Use key to invoke more responses. Thanks to Kevin for generating almost every one of these choreo scenes with faceposer. A block of response rules and a list of some scenes can be seen below.
