the 501st joint fighter wing comprised of a plethora of cute girls with magical powers and striker unit boosters attached to their legs takes to the skies again in the ongoing battle against the alien threat known as the neuroi. Back when i covered the first series, there was a lot of controversy centering around on the sole fact that the girls don’t wear pants in his world, which soon started branching off to the realm of pedophilia. As i’ve already addressed those concerns with my take on it, i’ll move past that and say i’m looking forward to the sequel since i found the huge cast of characters played by numerous well-known seiyuus absolutely adorable to watch with all their little nuances. Yes, there’s a fair amount panty shots along the way and the dvd release was even uncensored for the bath scenes, but the characters themselves are still by far the main appeal to me. The story thus far hasn’t been overly profound, but still enjoyable to watch considering how it coincided with a lot of the air-to-air combat scenes that i’m looking forward to seeing more of. Taking over the production of the sequel from gonzo is aic, who assisted with the animation work in the original. Quite frankly, this is a welcomed change since i’ve been pretty happy with aic’s work in the past year, which can’t be said about gonzo given their disappointing track record and lack of new shows. The one change i’m not so keen on is the replacement of chiba saeko by seto saori for sakamoto mio’s role. I haven’t seen much explanation for this change, but suspect it’s related to saeko’s decrease in seiyuu activity ever since she got married. It’ll probably take a bit of time to adjust to saori’s voice as mio, but i don’t imagine it’ll be too difficult. I’m just happy we have aic at the helm of this sequel, though i’m admittedly a bit wary of the sheer number of shows they’re taking on this season.
