[[[[Love how people use the "teamwork" argument to defend javelins being able to lock onto aircraft. lol]]]]
Agreed to a point. Teamwork counts for a lot but there are definitely some things that are too powerful even with teamwork considered. If I wanted to play devil's advocate for the teamwork option then I could say that Helicopters need to be buffed because it needs 2 people to use properly. That's teamwork, ergo the chopper should be as powerful as the SOFLAM combo.
I just don't like that argument style. Because there are so many people on a given map at once (think about it, up to 32 on one side) that means if 2 people can easily counter something, what happens if the other 32 players follow suit? Balance needs to be more than a 1v1, 2v1, or whatever.[[[[[So you get shot down a couple of times per game and are complaining about it? Oh and from the killcam, they guy got killed right after he got you. Funny how that happens. Couldn't have possibly been that huge "come shoot me" smoke trail leading right back to the guy that fires the javelin could it?]]]]]
The problem I have with your argument is that you seem to be stating that the death of one infantry is an equivalent exchange to the loss of the chopper, which is also a 2 man vehicle. Balance is not only about "he got a kill then got killed", it's also about being able to counter or avoid a tactic.
As much as people complain about stingers, they were a fairly good example of how balancing should work. A chopper isn't going to worry too much about a lone infantry with a stinger. This is good because one lone wolf should not be able to dominate an air vehicle so easily. That one infantry, even though he cannot kill that chopper would still make him cautious about approaching because he doesn't know it's just one. This is balance by deterrence.
Now, let's make it 2 engineers. One fires off his stinger, the chopper pops flares. The second engineer is able to lock on and fire well before those flares reload (assuming both pilot and gunner don't have flares). The chopper is now damaged and realizes if he stays he will get destroyed. This is balance by attrition.
Let's make it more interesting. 3 engineers. Very easy considering 32 man teams. One fires to pop the pilot flares, second to pop the gunner flares, third gets the damage. If the gunner didn't have flares, well you've just disabled that chopper. Keep in mind, this scenario we were just discussing doesn't take into account that tank top guns, jets, other choppers, and jeeps were not all firing on that chopper. This is balance by teamwork.
Now in each of these cases, the chopper has a chance to retaliate. Either by flying farther away and retreating when he's being shot at or by using his flares efficiently. Killing one of the engineers also lightens the load of how many stingers he has to worry about. This is balance by game mechanic.
So when we take the SOFLAM range into consideration, you have to wonder. What counter is there when the SOFLAM is so far away, your team can't get to it (balance by teamwork), you cannot get close enough to destroy it (balance by attrition), and ECM and Smoke don't last long enough or provide enough of an escape to get away (balance by mechanic)? Not to mention the lack of distinction between a heat lock and laser lock doesn't exist so you have no idea what countermeasure you're going to need at the time until it's too late.
Please keep in mind these are hypothetical situations. I still want to see everyone's take on the matter.
I know it's long.. going to get a lot of TL;DR.. but honestly I think it's worth considering.
