Pedro DeLaRosa:


Q. How much of a difference is the narrower tyre?
PdlR: I felt that it was smaller than I anticipated and the car balance was not very much affected. It was a change, but at a circuit like Valencia where the contact patch of tyre is so important and there are so many low speed corners, I was expecting something bigger.


Q. You got on the pace right away. Does that mean anything, or can you not judge because it's the first day?
PdlR: The times don't mean much. I'm more happy about the fact that the car is easy to drive and stable through the corners. There is nothing that is upsetting the car balance. That is what I am happy about. Once you have a good starting point, you can build on it. Laptimes with the fuel tanks we are running, it's really difficult to read anything into that.

Rubens Barrichello:


Q. Last year you drove the benchmark engine. Can you say anything about how the Cosworth feels?
RB: For the first day it was very good. We could quite clearly say that we were not running on our limits, because it was the first day out of the dyno running on the track. So we are not running on full power and there is lots to be gained. So I am keeping myself fairly open and my feet on the ground. There is lots to be gained from the car and from the engine as well. So far we ran reliably. We did have a small technical issue with the throttle late on, which stopped the engine, and it was too late to make a change and go again. But it was good.


Q. What can you say about the new Williams car today?
RB: It is the first day at school. I enjoyed being out there with them. You look at the times and say, 'wow, we are almost two seconds faster than a Ferrari' and you can wish that you had that time, but to be honest with you – you cannot predict much nowadays. If you take 10kg of fuel, or full tanks, you are talking about almost four seconds – so it is going to be dead easy for someone to get a sponsor and say that the car is faster in a way.

We do have a balance problem with these new tyres. We are having some understeer on the car, so with that amount of fuel we were running, and the lack of balance, I kind of liked the day. We were struggling a bit too much with the understeer, but just trying to dial it out. It was a very good first day.

Gary Paffett (tester McLaren)


Q. How much of a difference have the new tyres made? Can you isolate the wheelbase increase and the tyres?
GP: The biggest difference is, for sure, the tyres. With such narrow front tyres, and the shape of them as well, they are a lot more curved than the others so you do lose a lot of front grip, and that's what we've got to try and get back. That is the biggest difference, certainly, out of all the changes we've had this year.
Q. Do the tyres behave differently under different loads or is it just slightly less grip?
GP: It's generally less grip really, so obviously braking, you have less front end braking, and in the corners. Because the areo takes over more at high speed, the high speed is not so much of an issue but certainly the low and medium speed where you really demand mechanical grip is the biggest issue and the biggest thing you've got to try and overcome.
Q. Can you feel the wheelbase difference?
GP: You can. We've done work over the winter trying to simulate that and you already get a feeling of the car. We haven't driven the MP4-24 for a long time so you are kind of used to that now. We've made some wheelbase changes in the past and this is a fairly big change. You can feel the difference but the biggest difference is certainly the fuel weights that you are running, and the tyres.

Robert Kubica:


Q. How much fuel did you carry?
RK: I think I have never run so heavy in my life.
Q. Does that account for the laptimes?
RK: I don't care about the times really. The priority for today was completely different. Testing is not to be on the top of the list - of course it was better because it means the performance is there - but this year I think we will see the gaps much bigger. Last year maximum fuel load was 60-70kg so if someone was light the difference was about 30kg. This year you can find some cars running 30kg and some 150kg, which makes the gaps much bigger. It's important to be where we should be when it counts, in Bahrain.


Q. Are the narrower tyres and longer cars noticeable on track?
RK: Today confirmed what I knew already from the Jerez test last year where I tested with narrower tyres. For me it's difficult to judge because I'm driving a completely different car in a different team, so it's very difficult to pick up the difference. But I think it's much easier to overload them because there's less surface on the asphalt. In the high-speed the tendancy is to have more understeer. In the moment the tyre is giving away more in the past.
