ONR engages gamers in bid to counter piracy
The US Office of Naval Research (ONR) is focusing on citizens to help solve the growing problem of piracy in the Gulf of Aden. In co-operation with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) the ONR has partnered with the Institute for the Future, a Californian concern that uses commercial video gaming technology to explore world crises, Larry Schuette director of the ONR's Office of Innovation told Jane's on 13 May. The trio developed a system called Massively Multiplayer Online Wargame Leveraging the Internet (MMOWGLI) to "crowd source" online participants to develop responses to pirate situations in a 140-character chunks, Schuette said
