New Rhythm Heaven, New Wario Games Incoming? Yes, Soon. [Update]

According to Japanese Nintendo-centric blog Rambling Man, the company's upcoming release schedule looks something like this:

July 10 DS Densetsu no Starfi Taiketsu! ¥4,800
July 24 Wii Wario Land Shake ¥5,800
July 31 Wii Rei Gesshoku no Kamen ¥6,800
July 31 DS Rhythm Tengoku Gold ¥3,800

Details on the site are scant, but the titles are definitely something to get excited about. But remember kids, just because something appears on a Japanese blog, doesn't mean it's real. Just means, it's in Japanese!

Playstation 3 Sony Skipping Afrika For Europe

Afrika for the PlayStation 3, whatever it is, looks very pretty. We look forward to enjoying whatever Afrika is, whenever Afrika arrives. Oh, and thank heavens that we don't live in Europe, as it appears Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is dropping the publishing ball, telling Eurogamer that it shan't be publishing Afrika in the region. Why? We're as clueless to the reasons why as we are to how Afrika plays, but it doesn't give us much confidence in the title if SCEE can't be bothered.
Perhaps it's just a localization nightmare, but we hope that SCEA will invest in the game(?) and bring it to American PS3s. We've got an e-mail in with them now, just to see how interested they are in escorting Afrika out of Japan.

You take a Game Boy, you throw it in the microwave, you can kiss your Game Boy goodbye. Maybe the microwave, too. But if you take your Game Boy then apply some Photoshoppery to it, make it look like its been thrown in the microwave, descended into hell then returned with a thirst for human flesh, well, then you've got this puppy. Truly frightening.

Nothing says support your Japanese Olympic marathon runner like a giant robot! In Ise, Mie Prefecture, a 13-foot tall Gundam statue holding a banner that well-wishes Ise's own Mizuki Noguchi, the 2004 Olympic Marathon champ. Erected at the Takayanagi shopping center in Ise, the Gundam encourages Noguchi to repeat her 2004 win this summer in Beijing. Nothing like some Olympic non-sequitur what-the-fuck!

The $600,000 Gundam Painting

At a Christie's auction in Hong Kong, Japanese artist Tenmyouya Hisashi 's traditional-meets-modern Gundam painting "RX-78-2 Kabuki-mono 2005 Version" went for HK$4.8 million (approx. US$600,000). Says Hisashi about his work:

In Japan there are many "Gundam-Otaku's," and their adoration of Gundam is intense. Therefore, I did not want to change their image of Gundam. By changing Gundam's "mobile suit" to tattoos, I altered his body, and made him even more customized. I emphasized the very concept of the "mobile suit," and by setting Gundam against a background of gold leaf from traditional Japanese painting, I emphasized Gundam's samurai origins.

According to the artist:

In my mind, the distinctions between combat video games, manga, and ukiyo-e have become blurred. This is a painting that combines on a single screen the features of moving images, manga frames, and single prints.
